Brunel's Suspension Bridge

3½” Shay Cab (6)

The photographs show the built results of Laser cutting components for the Shay Cab. Laser cutting was undertaken by Malcolm High of Model Engineers Laser with me supplying a dxf drawing of the required parts to be cut from 1.2mm brass sheet. Included in the cutting were pieces for the cab steps and the tool box. Construction followed the words and music of Kozo Hiraoka – Building the Shay. The toolbox was redrawn with tenon and mortice joints and is shown with a temporary continuous hinge pin. So good was the register of the tool box parts that silver soldering was a joy. Window frames were soft soldered to the main pieces after silver soldering the strengtheners and the whole lot screwed together with many 12BA screws. The roof – after being curved in a fellow members rolls and fitted with two pins, was found to be lacking in register so another pin was added at the front to keep it all together. Roof vent, rain strips and handrails have yet to be made and fitted.
