Brunel's Suspension Bridge

Derrick Crane

A model such as this has a number of very salient point in its favour, not the least of which is the fact that it can be built by a beginner who has not yet acquired a fully equiped workshop. A drilling machine and normal hand tools can accomplish most of the work. Secondly it is quite large, the jib being over 4 feet long (1.2 metres) and it will perform all the motions as done by its big brother e.g. Hoist & Lower,Slew right and left, Luff in and out, lower under power or gravity. All the movements have four speeds plus an extra two on the Hoist.
The crane is powered by one small non-reversing mains motor. The main structure is constructed from ABS plastic material (Plastrut) which produces all the main engineering sections in scale sizes and the "gearbox" is made up using a range of Meccano gears - about 42 of them!
