Brunel's Suspension Bridge

Galloping Horses

This set of galloping horses was built over a period of 15 years to a scale of 2 inches to 1 foot. They are loosely based on the machines built by Frederick Savage and Company of Kings Lynn, Norfolk. It represents a machine as it would have appeared about 1895 to 1960, hence the Arc Lights rather than the later conventional light bulbs.
The centre engine is the Savage No 5 ½ model. The only casting used being the flywheel. This is used to drive the machine, fired by Propane. Because of the difficulty of managing the engine when the machine is in motion, it is now powered by an electic motor.
The Horses, 36 in all, are all hand carved from Lime wood. THIS MODEL WILL BE AT THE 2007 BSMEE EXHIBITION AT THORNBURY IN AUGUST
