These engines were the first attempt to generate power for lighting travelling fairground
rides and side shows. The only surviving single cylinder engine, built in the late 19th century
by Frederick Savage & co. of Kings Lynn Norfolk, is now in Andover. The owner kindly allowed
photographs and measurments to be taken by the modeller.
The model was built in 1999-2000 to a scale of 2 inches to one foot and is a fully working machine
and generates electricity at 6 volts. No castings were used in the construction, all parts being
fabricated. The boiler parts were made by the modeller, but were assembled by Western Steam, Love
Lane, Burnham-on-Sea to professional standards.
