Begbrook Talk: Pluto – Pipelines to Normandy

Pipeline Underwater Transportation of Oil (PLUTO) was a groundbreaking operation led by British engineers, oil companies and the British Armed Forces to construct underwater fuel pipelines beneath the English channel in support of Operation Overlord.
By the end of WWII the system had supplied 5.4 million long tons (around 144 million gallons) of fuel to Allied forces in Europe – one of the war’s greatest engineering achievements.
